Elon Musk isn't slowing down any time soon. The world's wealthiest person recently opened Tesla's sixth Gigafactory in Texas. The new facility will initially produce the Model Y, with the Cybertruck following shortly after. However, while Elon spoke little about the latter at the facility's ceremonial opening this past weekend, he did have some interesting news about the much-anticipated Roadster.
The sleek, all-electric sports vehicle is expected to launch next year, around the same time as the divisive pickup truck. Musk said at the plant's inauguration ceremony to the workforce, "This year's theme is "scaling up." There will be a big influx of new products next year." The reopened reservations site adds to the growing body of evidence that the Roadster is on its way.
While not immediately accessible as a model on the site, you may now reserve one by going to www.tesla.com/roadster, a feature that was previously disabled. The following is an excerpt from the page: "A $5,000 credit card deposit is required to reserve a Roadster, followed by a $45,000 wire transfer payment within 10 days. Reservations are not confirmed until money is received via wire transfer." A total of $50,000 is a hefty order, but it's the same as the $250,000 Founders Series trim that was previously projected.
The Roadster, which debuted in 2017, has been a long time coming. When it finally arrives, it will be a very fast machine. It takes just 1.9 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph, and 4.2 seconds to reach 100 mph. The claimed range is even more amazing; Tesla claims a range of up to 620 miles between charges.
Musk previously blamed the Roadster and Cybertruck delays on a continuous supply constraint, but ideally, a pair of new factories and a lessening semiconductor crunch will allay these fears.
The Roadster, Cybertruck, and Semi aren't the only new Tesla cars that will be available next year. Tesla's divisive Optimus humanoid robot is expected to arrive in 2023. According to Electrek, Musk said the robot will "upend our understanding of what the economy is... it will be able to perform practically everything people don't want to do."
"It will usher in an age of abundance," he continued. It may be difficult to imagine, but as you watch Optimus develop, and we make sure it's safe (no Terminator stuff), it will revolutionize the world even more than vehicles."
The Roadster finally going into production is exciting, but Musk has a track record of not following through on his promises. Take a look at the number of times the Cybertruck has been delayed. Hopefully, Musk means what he says this time, and we'll soon have a thrilling electric sports car on our hands.
